Taghazout vs Tamraght vs Anza — which base should you pick?

Taghazout, Tamraght and Anza are three villages along the same 20-kilometre stretch of Atlantic coast north of Agadir, and they are close enough together that your choice decides your evenings, not your surf. Taghazout is the busy surf town, Tamraght the quieter middle ground, Anza the closest to the airport. Morocco Surf Club is based in Tamraght and surfs across all three. Here is the honest comparison, including the cases where we are not the right answer.

The thing most people get wrong

Your base does not decide where you surf

The most common assumption is that staying in Taghazout means surfing Taghazout. It does not. The three villages are inside a short drive of each other, and any camp worth booking drives to whichever break the tide, swell, wind and group level actually favour that morning — which on a given day might be ten minutes north of you or ten minutes south.

So choose your base for the hours you are not surfing: how far you want to be from the airport, whether you want somewhere to walk to after dinner, and how quiet you want the evening to be. Then let the coach choose the spot. How that decision gets made is set out step by step on the coaching method page.

Short answers

Pick by what matters most to you

Choose Taghazout if…

You want the surf-town experience: cafés and restaurants you can walk between, other travellers around, and the famous right-hand points on your doorstep. Accept the trade — it is the busiest and least quiet of the three, and the longest airport run.

Choose Tamraght if…

It is your first surf trip, or you want short drives in both directions without giving up somewhere to walk to in the evening. It sits between the beginner sand to the south and the points to the north, which is why it is our base. See the surf house.

Choose Anza if…

You are on a short trip, arriving late, or want the shortest possible airport transfer — and you do not mind a city-edge beach over a surf village. Read what the wave itself is like on the Anza spot guide.

Where we are

Morocco Surf Club is based in Tamraght

The operating base is Tamraght, and most Surf & Stay weeks are run from the house there. Rooms in Taghazout village or Anza can sometimes be arranged instead, subject to availability and the written quote — tell us which you would prefer when you send your dates and we will say honestly whether it is possible for that week.

Base questions

Choosing a base — your questions answered

Drive times, evenings, and how much your village really affects your surfing.

Which of the three is best for a first surf trip?

Tamraght, for most first-timers. It sits between the beginner-friendly sand of the southern bay and the northern points, so the daily drive is short in both directions, and evenings are quieter than Taghazout village without being as detached as Anza. It is also where Morocco Surf Club is based.

Which base is closest to Agadir airport?

Anza. Allow roughly 30–35 minutes from Agadir Al Massira (AGA) to Anza, 40–45 to Tamraght, and 45–50 to Taghazout village. Those are relaxed estimates rather than best-case times; traffic and roadworks move them.

Which base has the most to walk to in the evening?

Taghazout village, clearly. It has the highest density of cafés and restaurants you can reach on foot and the most visible tourist activity. That is a benefit if you want somewhere to go after dinner and a drawback if you wanted the quiet version of the trip.

Does my base decide which spot I surf?

No, and this is the most common misunderstanding about the bay. All three bases are inside a short drive of each other, and camps drive to the day’s best conditions regardless of where you slept. Your base decides your evenings and your airport run; the tide, swell, and wind decide your surf.
